October 29th is National Oatmeal Day

Oatmeal is good for you in so many ways that I decided this was a good day to celebrate.  Some of oatmeal’s benefits include:

  • Stress reducer
  • Cholesterol reducer
  • Reduces risk of heart disease
  • Skin moisturizer
  • Keeps you full longer so you don’t need to eat as much

I would like to focus on the fact that oatmeal is a stress reducer.  In today’s world of packed schedules and over commitments, we all could use a little help in the stress category.

Serotonin is a hormone that is found in the human brain that regulates mood.  The higher your serotonin levels the better equipped you are to deal with stress.   When you eat foods that are high in complex carbohydrates they increase your serotonin levels.  Oatmeal is one of these foods. Next time you know you will have a hectic or stressful day, why not  start off with a bowl of oatmeal.  It may make you see the day in a whole new light.
