The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs

The Mammoth Site is located in Hot Springs, South Dakota.  I have heard about this large sink hole that preserved numerous Mammoth bones from the Ice Age and knew that I had to check it out.  Tours of the site are conducted every half hour and no reservations are required. On the tour, you get to walk through the excavation site and see the discoveries that have been pulled out of the hole and some that are still in the hole itself.  Currently they have found 3 different types of bones in the sink hole:

  • Wooly Mammoths
  • Colombian Mammoths
  • Short-faced  Bear

The sink hole has been excavated to a depth of 25 feet with evidence that another 60-70 feet of fossils exist below that.  It is just an unbelievable thing to imagine how many more fossils still exist in that hole.  I highly recommend a visit to this site.
